凌風 RYOFUhakuchikudo

凌風 RYOFU

Hakuchikudo, famous for Japanese fans, has created a space where you can
experience both the 'tranquility and vitality' of fans.

The name 'Ryofu' means to 'escape from the wind'.
We gave it this name to mean to escape the daily grind and wait for a good time.
Please take your time to enjoy the traditional Tosenkyo fan-tossing game,
Japanese green tea and culture unique to Kyoto at our retreat.

How to Play

Players toss their fans towards a target called the 'cho (butterfly)' on the wooden stand in the center and collect points for the shape their fan makes in relation to the butterfly and the stand.
There are many different variations, but at Hakuchikudo, you can enjoy playing the game with the original rules.

Equipment

  • Cho - The Butterfly

The target rests on top of a wooden stand.

  • Makura - The stand

The stand on which the cho (target) rests. The stand we use at Ryofu is the original stand that depicts either spring, summer, fall or winter on each of the sides.

  • Ougi - The fan

The fan you toss at the target. It is lighter than fans for everyday use and it flies like a paper airplane.

Experiencing Tranquility with Green Tea

Green Tea

Experience the taste of green tea in our tearoom. You will enter the room through the nijigiguchi, a small door that guests need to crawl through, so please change into the straw sandals provided at the entrance. When the gong rings, wash your hands and mouth one by one in the stone basin before entering the room through the nijiriguchi.
The tearoom in Ryofu is a small, Rikyu-style room. It starts off very dark, but your eyes will gradually become used to the darkness. This transformation from Yin to Yang is another element to enjoy.

Our Special Tea

The tea we serve at Ryofu uses matcha we carefully selected. The tea has a refined fragrance with a hint of sweetness.

About Facility

About Facility

Machiya Houses

We renovated a traditional Kyoto house dating back several hundred years to create our space.
We tried to retain as much of the traditional elements as possible, such as the exposed timber, the corridors, the cook stove and the windows to let the smoke out.
